Hair Hydration Heroes: The Products I Swear By for Soft, Shiny, Healthy Hair

If there is one thing I have learnt about looking after my hair, it is that hydration is not optional. Especially when, like me, you colour your hair and put it through a lot.

Between swimming, hot yoga, regular workouts and styling it, my hair gets a lot of exposure to the things that can leave it feeling dry, rough and generally a little unhappy. Colouring can also alter the hair fibre, making it more vulnerable to moisture loss and breakage. Add chlorine, heat, sweat and friction into the mix and it is very easy for your hair to start feeling (and look) like it needs some serious TLC. You’ve all seen my Hagrid hair, right?!

That is why I am quite obsessive about keeping my hair hydrated. For me, it is not about using one miracle product once in a while. It is about having a few really good hair hydration heroes in my routine-masks, leave-in conditioners, finishing products and, increasingly, hair tools that are designed with hair health in mind.

The science behind hydration is actually quite simple. Hair is made predominantly of keratin, and the outer cuticle acts a little like a protective layer around the fibre. When hair is damaged or dehydrated, that cuticle can become rougher and the hair loses some of its ability to retain moisture, leaving it feeling dry, frizzy and more prone to snapping and to split ends. Did anyone else spend hours of their teenage years snipping off split ends with nail scissors? Good hair products work in different ways: some attract and retain water, some replenish the hair's lipid layer, some smooth and seal the cuticle, while others help reinforce damaged bonds or improve elasticity.

These are the products I keep coming back to.

Hair Masks: My Deep-Hydration Heroes

A good hair mask is probably the most important step in my routine when my hair is feeling dry. I tend to use one regularly rather than waiting until my ends are desperate, particularly when I have been swimming or have had my hair coloured. I chuck it on 20 minutes before I wash my hair, or, occasionally, particularly after a holiday, I’ll leave it on overnight. I’m not actually sure if leaving a hair mask on for longer does anything, but in my mind it does.

№98 Beauty Hydra // Bond Hydrating Masque

This is one of those masks that feels like it was made for hair that has a lot going on. The Hydra Bond Complex is designed to restore elasticity while helping protect against UV and friction damage, and the formula combines hydrating oils and reparative proteins. Hydrolyzed elastin and proteins help improve flexibility and reduce breakage, while oils such as avocado, olive and castor oil help soften and lock in moisture. I particularly like this one when my hair feels stressed but I still want it to feel light and bouncy rather than coated. Oh, and it smells GORGEOUS.

If your hair is dry, coloured or on the thicker side, this is a serious hydration hit. The clever bit is Biomimetic Cuticle Technology, which is designed to mimic the way the cuticle behaves and help seal it, reducing moisture loss. There is also an avocado and shea conditioning complex containing oils of different molecular weights, which helps wrap the hair in moisture and gives that incredibly soft, slippery feeling. Olaplex reports that its testing showed hydration benefits lasting through multiple washes, as well as reductions in breakage and frizz. Love that!

This one is slightly different because I think of K18 less as a traditional hydration mask and more as a damage-repair treatment. Its K18PEPTIDE™ is designed to reconnect polypeptide chains in the hair and repair damage caused by things such as bleach, colour, chemical services and heat. The idea is to restore the hair's strength and elasticity from within rather than simply coating the outside of the strand. For coloured hair, this is one I especially like having in the cupboard because hydration is only half the story because sometimes you need to work on the underlying damage too.

An absolute classic for a reason. Elasticizer is a pre-shampoo treatment that focuses on moisture and elasticity. Hydrolyzed elastin helps give the hair fibre more stretch and flexibility, which can make it less prone to snapping, while glycerin helps retain moisture and castor and olive oils replenish and soften. It is particularly good when hair feels dry, straw-like or tangled and needs that immediate feeling of being brought back to life. Philip Kingsley reports a 46% reduction in breakage after one use in its testing. That is some kind of magic.

For everyone asking, yes, I have a code coming at the end of October. And it’s a good one! This mask is my choice when my hair is crying out for softness. It is designed to replenish the hair's moisture barrier, using conditioning ingredients including shea butter, jojoba esters and glycerin to help soften, smooth and retain moisture. I like it as a weekly reset: shampoo, apply through the lengths and ends, leave for five minutes and rinse. It is particularly good when you’re in a rush and hair feels rough rather than simply damaged.

Leave-In Conditioners: The Step I Never Want to Skip

I love a leave-in conditioner because it is the point in my routine where my hair goes from freshly washed to soft, shiny, smooth and smelling amazing. It also gives the hair another layer of protection after washing, which is particularly useful when you colour your hair or use heat.

Amika | Hydro Rush Intense Moisture Leave-In Conditioner

One of my favourites for that immediate hit of hydration. It contains hyaluronic acid, squalane and polyglutamic acid, ingredients that help attract and retain moisture, while also making the hair easier to detangle and reducing frizz. Amika says its formula delivers 3x more hydration and moisture for up to 72 hours in clinical testing.

This is the one for when I want hydration, softness and that gorgeous Gisou scent all in one. The formula combines Mirsalehi Honey, hydrolyzed milk protein and biomimetic ceramides. The ceramides are particularly interesting because they mimic lipids naturally found in the hair, helping smooth gaps in the hair structure, while the conditioning ingredients help with softness and detangling.

This is much more than a leave-in conditioner; it is essentially the prep step for dry, coloured hair. The Featherlight 6-Oil Blend helps hydrate, soften and smooth, while heat protection goes up to 450°F/232°C and UV filters help protect against the drying effects of the sun. Bumble and bumble also reports that it can help protect colour from fading for up to 16 washes. So technically its also saving us money, honey.

The name really does say it all. It detangles, hydrates, softens and helps protect against thermal damage without feeling heavy. The formula combines argan oil, amino acids, a superfood blend and naturally derived sugars that act as an anti-dehydration shield. It is one I reach for when I want my hair to feel instantly easier to brush and style. And trust me, you don’t want to try and brush my hair without a leave-in conditioner.

A brilliant affordable option and proof that you don't have to spend a fortune to keep your hair hydrated. This cream serum contains hyaluronic acid, an ingredient we hear so much about in skincare. This helps attract and retain moisture, and is designed to give all-day hydration and extra smoothness. I love it through the mid-lengths and ends when they are feeling thirsty.

The Finishing Touches: Especially for Dry Ends

Even with the best hair mask and leave-in conditioner, I find that my ends often need their own little finishing treatment. Ends are the oldest part of the hair, so they have had the most exposure to colour, heat, brushing and environmental damage. This is where I like something smoothing, nourishing and slightly protective.

Hair by Sam McKnight | Happy Endings Nourishing Balm

This is my handbag hero. It is a lightweight balm containing pro-vitamin B5 and shea butter, designed to smooth frizz, soften the hair and seal the appearance of split ends. It also contains mushroom-derived chitosan microcapsules to boost softness and shine. A tiny amount through the ends makes them look instantly more polished without making the hair greasy.

This is less about deep hydration and more about the final polished finish. I love it for taming those annoying little hairs around the hairline and making a slicked-back pony or bun look intentional rather than like I have simply thrown my hair up after the gym. It is one of those small styling tools that makes a surprisingly big difference.

For days when I want softness and polish without sacrificing movement, this is the one. It is an ultra-light styling balm that hydrates and smooths while giving a little weightless hold. It is particularly lovely on finer hair because it adds shine and control without that heavy, product-y feeling.

Don't Forget Your Hair Tools

It is very easy to spend a fortune on masks, oils and leave-ins and then undo some of that hard work with excessive heat.

Well, GHD have created the first interactive styler with “zero damage”. Their Sculpt uses Heat-Adapt technology to measure things such as how much hair is between the plates, how quickly you are moving and the angle at which you are styling. It then adjusts the temperature in real time rather than simply blasting the hair with a fixed amount of heat. GHD says the technology delivers zero damage to the natural structure of the hair, alongside up to 90% more shine and 2.5x less frizz. How amazing is that?

My Hair Hydration Rules

Think about how much you look after your skin compared to your hair. I thought about that last year and promised myself I would hydrate my locks more this year and it’s really made a massive difference to my overall hair health.

I don't think you need to use tons of product every time you wash your hair. For me, it is about knowing what my hair needs. If I have been swimming a lot, I reach for a richer mask. If my hair has been coloured or feels fragile, I will focus more on repair. If it is simply dry and frizzy, a good leave-in conditioner and a little balm through the ends can make all the difference.

As with most things, consistency is the biggest thing. You cannot expect one hair mask to undo weeks of chlorine, heat and styling. But keeping your hair well conditioned, protecting it from heat and UV, treating damage and giving the ends a little extra love means it stays softer, shinier and much more manageable. And that makes life that little bit easier.

Love,

Lisa xx
