The Ultimate On-Board Beauty Edit: What I Always Pack for Skin, Hair & Sanity at 30,000ft
Let’s be honest, flying can be chic but it can also completely wreck your skin, hair and mood if you’re not prepared. Dry cabin air, recycled breath, interrupted sleep and lots of time for overthinking? No thank you.
So, over the years (and its many flights – perks of the job), I’ve perfected my hand-luggage beauty routine to a tee. I swear by the same few items to arrive looking fresh, comfortable, hydrated, and like I’ve had eight hours of sleep… even when I absolutely haven’t. From quick whizzes over to Dublin and 24-hour flights to Australia alike, these products have seen me through it all; so much so that I feel like I’ve truly perfected my very own tried-and-tested travel edit. Ahead, I’m sharing everything I take on board, and exactly how I use it.
The Bags That Keep Me Organised:
First things first: if your bag is giving chaos, your flight will too.
I always travel with my Cabin With Pocket Suitcase in Antler Green because it’s chic, structured and that front pocket is a game-changer for laptops and last-minute airport scrambling. Inside the main compartment is where I keep everything beauty-related, usually in its own Space NK Large Travel Bag, which fits everything. You can see everything in there and it doesn’t feel like a black hole, thanks to the transparent material.
Hydration Before Skincare:
As I’m sure you’re fully aware, I love a cheeky champs, particularly if I’m on a flight and about to go on holiday. It just starts the trip with the right vibe! However, if you only do one thing on a flight, you must hydrate whether you have an alcoholic drink or not.
I always bring Humantra ElectrolyteDrink sachets with me. The Black Cherry is my fave when added to water. Cabin air dehydrates you fast, and this keeps everything balanced from the inside out.
And yes, I am that person with the Stanley Quencher Tumbler. Stay hydrated but make it aesthetic.
Non-Negotiable Lip Care:
Lips are always the first to go wayward on a flight and, as a cold sore sufferer, I need to make sure my lips are bouncy and hydrated as a matter of utmost importance, always.
I rotate between the By Terry Baume De Rose Lip Balm (luxurious, glossy, nourishing), Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream (a multi-use icon for lips, cuticles, everything), and Tatcha The Kissu Lip Mask(thick, perfect for overnight flights) depending on my mood. I apply these constantly – there’s no such thing as too much.
Clean Hands, Always:
Planes are not the cleanest vessels. Imagine looking under the seat… no way, Jose! So, a good hand sanitiser is essential. My favourites are the Aesop Resurrection Rinse-Free Hand Mist (smells incredible, doesn’t dry hands), Luna Daily The Everywhere Spray-to-Wipe (gentle and multi-use), and Neal’s Yard Natural Defence Hand Rub (an effective classic). I use these constantly – before skincare, after snacks, ad infinitum.
The In-Flight Facial (Yes, Really)
This is where the magic happens, and it’s also a great way to waste time on a long-haul slog. Here’s a step-by-step guide to the ultimate in-flight facial:
Step 1: Cleanse:
The Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water gently whisks away makeup and dirt – no sink needed.
Step 2: Mist:
BYOMA’s Balancing Face Mist or Caudalie’s Grape Water instantly refresh and prep the skin.
Step 3: Serum:
Medik8 C-Tetra Advanced or Sunday Riley C.E.O. Vitamin C serums give instant glow, while the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Serum offers serious hydration.
Step 4: Mask Up:
Depending on my mood, I switch between 111SKIN’s Jetsetter Bundle (it’s perfect for travel), the Augustinus Bader Hydrogel Mask (for that post-facial glow), or BIOEFFECT’s Imprinting Hydrogel Mask (for deep, deep hydration).
Yes, I will sit there in a sheet mask. I may have scared a few fellow passengers in my time, and handed a lot of masks out to anyone willing to join in on the fun!
Eye Masks = Instant Revival:
If I want to land looking like I haven’t just had the worst night’s sleep, these formulas are key. I love the 111SKIN Rose Gold Eye Masks to brighten and de-puff, or the soothing BIOEFFECT Imprinting Eye Mask if my peepers are a little irritated. The Elemis Pro-Collagen Hydra-Gel Eye Masks work well if I have to go straight from the plane to a meeting, because they visibly tighten the eye area within 20 minutes flat. If I want pure relaxation and spa vibes, then I go for the Marie Reynolds MRL Eyespa self-heating eye compresses, which magically heat up and feel like a soothing cuddle.
Model Hair, No Effort Required:
Plane hair can go either way, and we want to look effortless but intentional. I love to soak my hair in leave-in conditioner and wave spray before braiding it up. Not only does this keep it out of my way during the flight, but it means I can simply land, take my hair out, chuck on a cossie, head to the beach, and look like I’ve been there for days thanks to my delicious beachy waves.
For this, my favourite products are Living Proof’s Leave-In Conditioner (for general hydration and frizz control), Ouai’s iconic Wave Spray for an undone texture, and Slip’s Silk Skinny Scrunchiesto avoid breakage (and kinks!).
Switch Off Properly:
Noise cancelling headphones are the key to survival on a flight. My Beats Studio Pro Headphones are always in my bag. Whether I’m listening to a playlist, a podcast, or just silence, noise-cancelling kit makes all the difference.
Sleep Like You’re Not on a Plane:
This is how you really elevate a flight from bleurgh to brilliant.
Get a good pillow (I like the Go Neck Pillowbecause it’s actually supportive, not just decorative) and a Hot Hugger Water Bottle (trust me – it’s cosy, comforting, and so underrated) for when the plane gets cold. FYI, planes are always either ice cold or boiling – there’s no in-between. I usually ask a flight attendant to fill up my hot water bottle and they never have a problem with it. Then try SNOX Energy Compression Socks for circulation purposes, and M&S Pure Cashmere Socks for comfort. Grab a Drowsy Black Jade Sleep Mask to block out the world, and pop a few DIOME Rested Supplements for proper, quality rest.
Lastly, layer up, switch off, and create your own little cocoon.
Ultimately, flying anywhere is a privilege, and it doesn’t have to mean feeling dull, dry and exhausted.
With a few key products and a little bit of intention, you can turn your flight into actual self-care time; skin stays hydrated, hair behaves, and you step off the plane feeling like the best version of yourself.
And, honestly? That’s the real luxury.
Have fun on your travels this summer!
Love,
Lisa xx
