The Ultimate Summer Fragrance Edit
Summer has a smell: sun cream, warm skin, something floral drifting from a nearby bush, Aperols at sunset… you get the vibe. But, if you’re not literally able to live la dolce vita, these scents will bottle it all for you.
So, consider this your fragrance wardrobe for all summers to come: coconut-drenched holiday scents for the pool, crisp citrus ones for the school run, something sultrier for nights out. There's a note here for every version of summer, ready to whisk you away to sunnier climes without so much as a boarding pass.
Seventeen fragrances, one candle, and absolutely no excuse not to smell incredible. Let's get into it…
If you want to smell like you’ve spent the day somewhere ridiculously glamorous, this is the scent for you. Lust For Sun is a solar floral that combines coconut and monoi with ylang-ylang, orange blossom and gardenia before drying down to vanilla, musk and ambroxan. It has that gorgeously creamy, warm-skin quality that makes you think of sunshine, holidays and golden hour.
Think: sun cream, warm skin and a poolside cocktail.
Portofino ’97 is a much more sophisticated take on a summer fragrance. Inspired by the Italian Riviera, it’s citrusy and woody with bergamot, amber and vetiver alongside incense, patchouli and musk. It doesn't scream “beach holiday” – rather, it feels like linen trousers, enormous sunglasses and an Aperol on a sea-facing terrace. Chic, grown-up and incredibly easy to wear.
Think: Portofino at sunset.
This is summer in the Mediterranean, bottled. Mandorlo di Sicilia opens with Italian citrus, bergamot, orange and star anise before moving into green almond and ylang-ylang. Vanilla, cedarwood, musk and balsamic notes give it a soft, creamy finish. I love this if you want something fresh but not sharp. The almond gives it a deliciously smooth quality, making it feel slightly more unusual than your standard citrus cologne.
Think: driving along the Sicilian coast with the windows down.
Don't be fooled into thinking every summer fragrance needs to be watery and light. Queen of Silk is proof that you can wear something richer in the sunshine. It opens with soft peach and apricot facets from Chinese osmanthus flowers, with patchouli and Indian tuberose adding depth. It has a warm, silky quality that makes it particularly gorgeous for summer evenings.
This is the one I'd choose for dinner somewhere fabulous rather than lying by the pool.
Think: silk dress, bronzed skin and dinner at 9pm.
This is possibly one of the most literal and coolest summer fragrances on my list. Swimming Pool is all about that icy feeling of jumping into cold water on a ridiculously hot day. Mint, basil and ginger create the opening, followed by eucalyptus and geranium with woods, grass and ambroxan underneath. It is green, fresh, aromatic and wonderfully invigorating. If you don't like sweet or overly floral summer fragrances, try this.
Think: diving into a freezing pool at midday.
A summer fragrance classic for very good reason. Beach Walk is designed to capture the memory of walking beside the sea on a hot day, with bergamot, pink pepper and lemon leading into ylang-ylang and coconut milk, plus musk and cedarwood underneath. It has that delicious combination of salty skin, warm sand and sunscreen without actually smelling like you've emptied a bottle of SPF.
Think: bare feet on hot sand.
If you prefer your summer fragrance to be fresh, effortless and slightly undone, this is hard to beat. Wood Sage & Sea Salt combines ambrette seed, sea salt and sage to create that windswept, salty-air feeling. It doesn't smell conventionally “pretty” and that's exactly why I love it. It's clean without being soapy, fresh without being citrusy, and incredibly easy to wear.
Think: wild swimming on the British coast.
One for the orange-blossom lovers.
Jardin de L'Orangerie combines neroli buds, jasmine and ylang-ylang with orange blossom milk and sandalwood. Dries Van Noten describes it as solar and sensual, and I completely agree. There is something creamy and almost addictive about the orange blossom here. It feels sunny and luxurious rather than simply fresh.
Think: walking through an orange grove in the heat.
Yes, a rose fragrance can absolutely work for summer and this is a brilliant example. l’Homme À la rose takes a traditionally feminine ingredient and gives it a fresh, green and woody interpretation. Grapefruit and Damascena rose create the opening, followed by a rosy woody heart and an amber-woody base. Don't let the name put you off if you're a woman. I love a fragrance that doesn't worry too much about whether it is supposed to be “for” men or women.
Think: crisp white shirt, freshly cut roses and sunshine.
For anyone who wants their summer fragrance to transport them somewhere exotic, this is the one I'd reach for. Marrakech in a Bottle has that warm, spicy, sun-baked feeling that makes you imagine colourful souks, warm stone slabs and golden evening light. It sits beautifully in the gap between a fresh daytime fragrance and something more sensual for the evening.
Think: Marrakech at golden hour.
This is one of those fragrances that makes me want to book a holiday immediately. Néroli Bronzé combines orange zest, pomelo and cardamom with neroli, lavender and orange flower, drying down into blonde woods, dewy musk and crisp amber. It has a gorgeous juicy citrusy opening but becomes warmer and more sensual on the skin. Basically, it smells like golden hour in Marrakech.
Think: orange blossom, warm terracotta and the last hour of sunshine.
This is for the person who doesn't want to smell like everyone else on the beach. Hibiscus Mahajád is a flamboyant extrait built around hibiscus and Damascena rose, with vanilla, leather, musk, cassis, mint and cinnamon. It is richer and more dramatic than most summer scents, but that is precisely what makes it interesting. The mint gives it freshness while the vanilla, leather and amber create a warm, sensual trail.
Think: a jewel-coloured silk dress on a hot summer night.
No summer fragrance edit of mine would be complete without Bronze Goddess.
This is the OG “I have just come back from somewhere fabulous” fragrance. Creamy coconut, tiare flower, amber, sandalwood and vanilla create that unmistakable sun-kissed, warm-skin effect. It's nostalgic, sexy and completely synonymous with summer. If you've never tried it, this is your sign.
Think: bronzed skin, coconut and a beach bar at 5pm.
If coconut isn't your thing, try fig. Philosykos is green, creamy and beautifully Mediterranean, capturing the smell of a whole fig tree: the leaves, the fruit and the milky sap. It feels incredibly chic and understated. This is one for those who want their summer fragrance to smell expensive without announcing itself from across the room.
Think: a lazy afternoon under a fig tree in Greece.
For something a little more playful, Sundazed is a gorgeous choice. It combines citrusy mandarin and Californian lemon with neroli and white musk, giving it a bright, almost sparkling quality. It feels youthful without being juvenile and is perfect for hot days when you want something energetic rather than creamy or sensual.
Think: sunshine, citrus and a road trip down the California coast.
If your idea of summer involves a tropical island, this is the one. Virgin Island Water combines bright citrus and tropical fruit with jasmine and white florals, before settling into creamy coconut and tropical woods. Creed itself describes it as a scent designed to evoke a sun-drenched tropical paradise. It is basically a holiday in fragrance form.
Think: turquoise water, coconut and absolutely no emails.
So, which one should you choose?
If you're a coconut girl, go for Lust For Sun, Beach Walk, Bronze Goddess or Virgin Island Water.
If you prefer fresh and salty scents, try Wood Sage & Sea Salt or Swimming Pool.
If you're all about the citrus, I'd pick Portofino ’97, Mandorlo di Sicilia or Néroli Bronzé.
For summer evenings, reach for Queen of Silk or Hibiscus Mahajád.
And if you want something that feels a little different, I'd go for Jardin de L'Orangerie, l’Homme À la rose or Philosykos.
Because, ultimately, the perfect summer fragrance doesn't necessarily have to smell “fresh”. It just needs to make you feel like you're somewhere you really want to be.
A Candle For The Road
Obvs I had to add this baby. If you want to bring that summer feeling into your home, try this wax embodiment of creamy coconut milk, sea salt, tobacco, tuberose, ylang ylang and sandalwood. It’s warm, smoky and slightly addictive – like sun-warmed skin, salty air and a late summer evening all rolled into one. Perfect for when the sun sinks beneath the horizon and you’re not quite ready for summer to end.
However you're spending the rest of summer – poolside, plane-side, or just pretending on your patio – there's a scent up there to match the mood. Spritz accordingly, and don't feel remotely guilty about owning more than one.
And if the dolce far niente fully deserts you the second September hits? Light the candle. Fake it till next June makes it.
Until next time…
Love, Lisa xx
