SkinVive and HarmonyCA: What Are They, and Are They Actually Worth It?
Right, I want to talk about two treatments that have been coming up again and again in my world lately: SKINVIVE™ and HArmonyCA™. I'd been hearing a lot of buzz about them, so I went straight to someone I trust completely to get the full lowdown: Dr. Apul Parikh from the Medical & Cosmetic Skin Clinic in London. He's the real deal, a proper medical expert who only recommends treatments that have the science to back them up. No fluff. I sat down with him to get the nitty-gritty details, and I honestly learned so much. Grab a cuppa, get comfy, and read on…
So, what actually are these treatments?
According to Dr. Apul, both SKINVIVE™ and HArmonyCA™ are injectable treatments that improve skin quality. HArmonyCa™ falls into a category called biostimulators and SKINVIVE™ into a skin booster category, which basically means they work with your skin to improve it from the inside out, rather than just filling or freezing. And while most people associate injectables with the face, both of these can also be used on the neck, décolletage and hands. I personally love this versatility.
They work quite differently though, so let me (well, Dr. Apul…) break them down one at a time.
SKINVIVE™: The hydration hero
SKINVIVE™ (or SKV, as Dr. Apul calls it) is a hyaluronic acid-based product that's injected directly into the skin using a very tiny needle. Small amounts are placed across the treatment area and gently spread to ensure even distribution. The goal is deep, lasting hydration with better skin elasticity. Though it won’t volumise skin in the same way that filler does. It’s not designed to give filler-style results. That's actually the biggest misconception Dr. Apul comes across.
What makes it stand out from other skin boosters is the evidence behind it. There's clinical data showing it improves hydration and elasticity for up to nine months from a single session.
The treatment itself takes around 15 to 20 minutes and it's not too uncomfortable. The needles are tiny, and if you're worried about discomfort, Dr Apul would use a topical anaesthetic beforehand. Downtime is minimal; you might get some mild redness for a few hours and sometimes a tiny bruise. Results start to show at around the one-week mark and maintenance typically includes a top-up every 6 to 12 months, depending on your skin.
Dr. Apul says SKV is for everyone. We all want fresher, more glowy skin and this treatment is suitable for most patients. The only people who should avoid it are those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or who have severe autoimmune conditions.
HArmonyCA™: The collagen kickstarter
HArmonyCA™ (or HACa) is where things get really interesting. It's the first and only injectable product that combines hyaluronic acid with calcium hydroxyapatite, which works using what Dr. Apul calls DART technology: Dual Action Rejuvenation Treatment. The HA gives a very subtle lift and acts as a carrier for the calcium hydroxyapatite, which then gets to work stimulating collagen production over time.
The actual process isn’t overwhelming at all. It begins with a thorough consultation where you discuss your treatment plan and take some “before” photos. Then your skin is thoroughly cleansed, and the injection sights are marked up. Next it’s injected using a small tube called a cannula, which sounds scarier than it is. The whole appointment runs around 30 to 45 minutes, and there can be some bruising and swelling for 48 to 72 hours afterwards, so it’s worth planning around.
The results are genuinely impressive and super natural-looking, because they're built on collagen rather than volume. You'll notice an immediate improvement after one treatment, but the real magic happens gradually as collagen production ramps up over the following months. Dr. Apul says, “As the collagen production starts, the patient will notice the skin quality improving over time, as the skin thickens and fine lines soften.” Peak collagen formation happens between three and six months, so the results genuinely keep getting better. And they last up to 18 months from a single treatment, sometimes longer!
Dr. Apul typically starts recommending collagen-stimulating treatments to patients in their mid to late thirties, though it really does depend on individual skin quality, lifestyle factors like sun damage or smoking, and what someone's trying to achieve. People with stretchy, crepey skin on their face, hands or neck will love this, though it can be used for prevention as well as correction. His oldest patient to date was in their mid-seventies. It really is for everyone. And again, HArmonyCA™ can be combined with other injectables such as fillers as well as microneedling, energy devices – you name it!
Why do these two work so well together?
This is the bit I found most exciting. Dr. Apul often combines both treatments in a single appointment, using HArmonyCA™ to stimulate collagen and improve skin quality at a deeper level, and SKINVIVE™ to hydrate and refine the skin's surface. Together, they essentially turbocharge the results of each other.
Is it a filler? (Spoiler: no)
Neither of these treatments volumise, and Dr. Apul is very clear on this. Traditional dermal fillers are designed to volumise soft tissue. These aren't. HArmonyCA™ tightens and thickens the skin by building collagen; SKINVIVE™ hydrates and improves elasticity. If someone's experiencing mild sagging, HArmonyCA™ can help to tighten things up, but it won't replace the volumising effect of a traditional filler. Different tools for different jobs.
What's shifting in aesthetics right now
I asked Dr. Apul about the bigger picture, and his answer really resonated with me. He's seeing a clear move away from the overfilled look of recent years. People are finally realising that focusing on skin quality is what makes the biggest long-term difference. Less aggressive intervention, more intelligent treatment. Fewer people are going for surgical facelifts; more are investing in treatments that improve what's already there.
And when it comes to choosing a practitioner, Dr. Apul is passionate about you finding the right one. He says patients should always ask for the scientific evidence behind any treatment being recommended. If your healthcare professional can't provide it, that's a red flag. Ask which products they're using and why. There are over 200 types of filler, he warns me, so ask why your practitioner uses the one they do. Ask how many treatments they've performed and whether they know how to manage complications. Make sure the clinic is regulated and clean, that pricing has been clearly discussed, and that you feel genuinely comfortable with the person treating you. If something doesn't feel right, get a second opinion.
The quick-fire round
I couldn't resist asking Dr. Apul for his rapid-fire takes. Here's what he said:
Most underrated treatment?
“HArmonyCA™ and SKINVIVE™, combined.”
Most overhyped?
“Energy-based treatments like HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) and Morpheus.”
Biggest skincare myth?
“That more products equals better skin.”
One thing everyone can do for better skin?
“Don't smoke.”
His personal non-negotiable?
“SPF. Every single day.”
If you could only invest in one treatment this year?
“SKINVIVE™.”
I came away from this conversation genuinely fascinated, and I’ve since had the treatment and girllll, my skin is glowing and my jaw is definitely more defined. On top of that, the idea of building better skin quality rather than just treating the surface feels really aligned with where I am right now. If you're curious, I'd recommend visiting skinvive.co.uk or harmonyca.uk to learn more. You can also locate a clinic near you here to book a consultation with a verified practitioner.
As always, I only share things I genuinely believe in, and aesthetic innovations are something I'm very excited about. In fact, I’m on my way to a talk on aesthetic industry newness as we speak!
Love,
Lisa xx
