Sweat-Proof Makeup That Still Looks Like Skin

As I write this, we're experiencing a cold snap. But last week was so roasting that I even dug my sandals out! It got me thinking about how annoying it is when makeup melts off in the heat. You leave the house looking fresh, and by lunchtime you're a glazed doughnut. Not the vibe.

The good news? There are some genuinely brilliant products out there that will stay put through a heatwave, a commute, a gym class, or whatever life throws at you. And your skin will look like actual skin rather than a painted-on mask. That's always the goal for me: I want my makeup to look like makeup, not a 2016 filter. So, here's everything I reach for when things get sweaty.

Primers:

Okay, I'll be honest with you… I'm not a huge primer person. On a normal day, a good moisturiser does the job just fine for me. But when it's really hot? That's when I'll actually reach for one. Though, if I'm going to use a primer, it needs to really earn its spot in my routine.

Milk Makeup | Hydro Grip Primer

The Milk Hydro Grip is the one I hear the most about, and with good reason. It's got this grippy, slightly tacky texture that really does hold your makeup in place. (Like velcro!) It also doubles as a hydrating base so that it sits comfortably.

Laura Mercier Pure Canvas is another great option if you want more of a classic, blurring primer. It smooths and preps without feeling heavy.

Then there's the Hourglass Vanish Primer, which I love for how silky it feels going on. It genuinely disappears into skin and creates the most gorgeous base for foundation.

And if you really mean business, if you're heading somewhere HOT and you need your makeup to survive, then the One Size Secure the Sweat Primer is exactly what it says on the tin. It's specifically designed for warm weather and high-activity situations. Do not underestimate it.

Foundations:

This is where it gets really fun. The secret to sweat-proof makeup that still looks like skin is all in the formula you choose. And the good news is, "long-wearing" doesn't have to mean "cakey" anymore. Woopeeeee.

Victoria Beckham | The Foundation Drops

Hear me out: Victoria Beckham Beauty The Foundation Drops. I know, I know, the price. It's outrageous. I've said it before and I'll say it again. But I cannot deny how good this is. It's rich and moisturising but somehow it stays. It feels like a second skin rather than a product, and it photographs beautifully. If you're going to splash out on one thing, let it be this. (Though, if you have oily skin, give it a miss.)

Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Water Powder Serum is another genius product if you've not tried it yet. It goes on feeling almost weightless but builds to a gorgeous, skin-like coverage. The name really does make sense when you try it.

NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation is a proper reliable workhorse. It earns its "longwear" badge, comes in a huge range of shades, and gives that lit-from-within glow without ever looking overdone. This is my failsafe pick when I need to know something will last.

And for anyone on a budget, please don't sleep on Maybelline Super Stay. It’s one of those highstreet formulas that genuinely holds its own against anything five times the price. I've reached for it on shoots. That says it all.

Bronzers and Blushers:

My hot take? Cream over powder, every time. Especially in the heat. Powder can look patchy and dusty once you've been sweating, whereas a cream formula melts into the skin and genuinely stays there. It also looks a million times more natural.

For bronzers, I'm reaching for sticks and creams all summer long.

Chanel | Les Beiges Healthy Glow Bronzing Cream

The Chanel Healthy Glow bronzer is a dream, giving that effortless, just-back-from-a-weekend-somewhere-nice warmth.

Dior Forever Skin Bronzer Stick is another absolute icon; easy to apply, easy to blend, and the staying power is brilliant.

Makeup Forever Artist Color Bronzing Stick is a bit of a hidden gem if you haven't discovered it yet, it’s really pigmented but very blendable.

Makeup by Mario Soft Sculpt gives the most flattering, skin-toned warmth. It's become a staple for me, and you can use it all over your face to fake a tan.

Now, onto the blushers.

Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge is a classic for a reason; it's been around forever and it just works. A tap, a blend, a glow, job done.

Giorgio Armani Luminous Liquid Blush gives the most gorgeous, lit-up flush.

Sculpted by Aimee Cream Blush,  Aimee can genuinely do no wrong, and this is one of her best.

Huda Blush Filter is a newer one that I've really been enjoying with really beautiful, would last through an apocalypse payoff.

Rare Beauty Soft Pinch isn’t overrated at all, because it really is that good.

Mascaras:

Right, I have a whole blog post dedicated to mascara The Ultimate Mascara List Update so I won't go on too much, but for summer, you want something that will not budge. No panda eyes here. No thank you!

Rum | Mascara

Rum Wrap Party Tubing Mascara has been a cult favourite for a while now and it absolutely deserves the hype. It’s made by some serious industry titans (Sam Chapman, Sali Hughes and Jo Jones) so it’s hardly a surprise that it lengthens, volumises, and genuinely stays put.

Maybelline Sky High is one I've recommended to everyone. And yes, it's another highstreet pharmacy buy. It gives the most incredible length and it doesn't flake or smudge, even in the heat.

As for a waterproof mascara, Hourglass Unlocked doesn't compromise on the actual look of your lashes. You know how some waterproof mascaras make your lashes look a bit stiff and spider-leggy? Not this one.

Lips:

In the heat, I always say: keep lips simple. Heavy lipstick can feel stifling when it's warm, and it tends to migrate, bunch and feather. Instead, go for a tint. You need something that stains the lips and gives colour without needing constant touch-ups.

Violette | Lip Nectar

Violette FR Lip Nectar is just gorgeous. Sheer, glossy, comfortable, and it actually stays.

Wonderskin is one I've been seeing everywhere recently, and rightfully so; it stains the lips in the most beautiful, natural way with very impressive staying power.

And the classic Benefit Benetint is a no-brainer. Look, it's been around forever because it's brilliant. Rose-tinted, long-lasting, works on cheeks too. A true multitasker.

Setting Sprays:

This is the final step that you don’t want to miss. A good setting spray is what ties everything together and keeps it all in place when the temperature rises.

One/Size | On ‘Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof  Setting Spray

One Size does a really fantastic job here. This is the same brand behind the Secure the Sweat Primer, so you know they take staying power seriously.

Iconic London Prep Set Glow is one of my all-time favourites; it gives the most beautiful dewy finish while still locking everything in.

Milk Hydro Grip Setting Spray is the perfect companion to the primer of the same name if you're going all in on the Milk lineup.

A fine mist of one of these and you're good to go… heat, humidity and all.

Right, I think I'll stop there before this turns into a dissertation! The key takeaway is this: sweat-proof doesn't have to mean heavy or mask-like. The right formulas, in the right order, can genuinely look like skin all day long, even when it's roasting out there.

Let me know which ones you try! I'd love to hear how you get on.

Love,

Lisa xx
